Across all settings, the professional practice of safeguarding starts with good record keeping and the need to preserve evidence of right-doing.
The specific question to be answered here is what happens when an allegation or concern of wrong-doing is made against someone working or volunteering in or with your organisation?
'Serious allegations in education settings are rare but in England that latest statutory guidance now directs that any 'low-level' concerns should also be recorded, and appropriate action taken to safeguard children. Consequently, it's vitally important that leaders and staff in all education settings adopt an open and transparent approach to the reporting and recording of such concerns.
Low Level Concerns
The term 'low level concerns' is used by the Department for Education in England to include a wide range of behaviours and could include adults being over-friendly with children, taking photographs of children on their mobile phone, using inappropriate language or having favourites.
In education settings it is essential that staff share any such concerns with the Headteacher/Principal, who will be responsible for ensuring that those concerns are recorded and appropriate action taken (which should also be recorded). The safeguarding culture in your setting should demonstrate that anyone reporting a concern or any person who is the subject of an allegation or concern can be assured of a professional response.
By having a clear and unambiguous policy and adopting the confidential and structured approach embodied within CONFIDE® you will also be able to protect those that may be subject to false allegations or misunderstandings.
How Can CONFIDE® Help?
CONFIDE® is our secure software solution for recording and case-managing allegations and concerns against staff members or others who are working or volunteering in or with your organisation.
The system enables you to easily record concerns in a secure environment, to record all aspects of your investigation, upload relevant documents and produce accurate reports and data (hopefully not too many 'trends'!). CONFIDE® also allows you to restrict access to the system so you can be reassured that the data remains confidential and is only available to users with the appropriate permissions.
