And What About Racism?

Monday 17th October 2022 - 3:45pm

This webinar explored the topic of racism, with a specialist panel. They discussed the problems being faced by children of colour, and the ways that we can improve, to better support them.

Talking about racism is important to help us all improve our awareness and knowledge of the topic

This Webinar addressed the key issues, led by guest speaker Dean Pymble from Show Racism the Red Card. Dean joined Vikkey Chaffe from The Safeguarding Company to discuss how to support children of colour in a school setting, making racism a high priority in safeguarding policies and what unique problems children of colour are facing in a sports setting.

The Webinar was followed by a Q+A, where we encouraged questions and discussions to help us all learn and improve our knowledge together.

Show Racism The Red Card is an anti-racism educational charity.

We aim to combat racism by enabling role models, who are predominately but not exclusively footballers, to present an anti-racist message to young people and others. Show Racism the Red Card acknowledges that racism changes, as do the experiences of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities in the UK. Our message and activities, therefore, need to be able to respond to such changes as and when appropriate.

We achieve this through:

  • Producing and delivering educational resources
  • Developing activities to encourage people, including young people, to challenge racism
  • Challenging racism in the game of football and other sports.

Dean Pymble is the Campaign Manager for Wales at Show Racism the Red Card and is responsible for the operational and strategic direction of the Welsh region of the charity.

He is a school governor at Fairwater Primary School in Cardiff and volunteers at Canton Liberal Football Club coaching the U11 team.

Dean has over 12 years of experience working in the third sector and education, having previously worked at Cardiff City Foundation, managing their schools' programmes, supporting young people across South Wales living in areas of deprivation with education opportunities and to live healthier and more active lifestyles.

He has an undergraduate degree from Cardiff Metropolitan University in Science in Health, Exercise and Sport, and is passionate about using the power of sport and positive sporting role models to educate young people and adults.
